LPJ-GUESS 4.0.1 Release Notes =========================== These are the most important changes you'll notice when switching from LPJ-GUESS 3.0 to 4.0. Apart from this, numerous bugfixes, adjustments and technical improvements have been made. For a full history, refer to the Subversion history. * Change of forcing dataset and change to center-gridcell coordinates. - Change of forcing dataset from CRU to CRU-NCEP, with resulting changes to FastArchive header files, and to input model. - Longitude/latitude coordinates in gridlists and data files should now assumed to refer to gridcell centre, instead of south-west corner. - Values in CRU_NCEP FastArchive files stored as decimal numbers at suitable precision. - Interim CRU_NCEP dataset for 1901-2015 substituted with CRU precipitation for all but the last year due to issues with currently available release of CRU-NCEP. Care is advised in interpretation of simulation results for 2015 due to a potential discontinuity in precipitation at the start of this year. - For reasons of subversion code storage, the file name cru_TS30.cpp was kept, although the forcing data is no longer CRU TS. * Support for multiple land cover fractions and land use in each gridcell including croplands, pastures, managed forests in addition to climate-driven potential vegetation (PNV) as in earlier model versions. Net and gross land cover change are supported as alternatives, switchable from the instruction file (see guessdoc.doc). Available management options: cropland (detailed sowing, harvest, irrigation, rotations, tillage, residue management and, for the C-N version, also N-fertiliser amendment functions), pasture (yearly cutting), managed forest (continuous cover forestry). - Crop PFT's differ from PNV PFT's in that they have: sowing, daily allocation (separate versions with and without N limitation) with phenology coupled to leaf development, irrigation, harvest, and tillage. - Basic functionality for pasture and managed forest (harvest). - Crop phenology and allocation has separate functions for simulations with and without nitrogen limitation. When running with landcover and the C-only version, include the crop_c.ins file instead of crop_n.ins, and replace land-use files. - Stand type definition in instruction file for different land cover/management types, specifying establishment rules (e.g. PFT selections), irrigation, covercrop, forestry harvest type (continuous or clearcut) and rotations. - Management type definition in instruction file used for stand types with rotations. - Monitoring of C and N balance for each year and over the historic simulation period. If there are any imbalances, a warning will be written to the log-file. - Litter transfer to soil on same day as phenological turnover for crop PFT's. * C to N ratios for root and sapwood are now effectively fixed at prescribed PFT target values, instead of varying in proportion to change in leaf C:N. * Temperate needleleaved evergreen tree (TeNE) PFT enabled by default in the global.ins instruction file. * Calendar years instead of simulation years appear in output by default. Change by replacing date.get_calendar_year() with date.year on line 37 of CommonOutput::outannual (commonoutput.cpp). * New version of the LPJ-GUESS Windows Shell, with reinstated 3D visualisation of vegetation structure removed in version 3.0. 64-bit (x64) compilation of the model as a Windows dynamic-link library (DLL) is required. * Soil texture now supports grid cell-specific sand, silt and clay fractions (specified in driver.cpp). Fractions were derived based on texture classes (Sitch et al. 2003) in soil triangle (except for organic soil, where global values from the fixed sand, silt and clay fractions, as e.g. in v3.0, were kept). Revert to fixed sand, silt and clay fractions by adding the line "textured_soil 0" to the instruction files file to use fixed values from Parton et al.(1993)). * The benchmarks euroflux and euroflux_globalpfts are currently being updated, and are consequently temporarily removed from the release package. (They are however kept in the code repository for repository reasons: users downloading from the svn code repository should remove the catalogues before running the benchmark suite.) * The release version 4.0.1 contains bugfixes to release version 4.0. Mainly: Nitrogen pools are now being balanced when running in carbon-only mode. Bugfix for bug introduced in release version 4.0 causing RCP-scenario to start one decade too late. Addition of missing crop-functional-types BVOC parameters. Enquiries to Johan.Nord@nateko.lu.se. Further information available at http://web.nateko.lu.se/lpj-guess
